When I began painting mugshots this year, I started with a man named William Munro from a series of photos of 1920’s Australian mugshots that I’ve long admired. I was soon taken, though, with mugshots of American women from the 1940’s–1950’s, and I think I’ll be sticking with those for a while. It feels right to be painting women at this moment in time, and badass women at that.
These mugshots, along with many other portraits, were on display at Northern Quarter (1724 Douglas Street, Victoria BC) in November 2018 as part of the show “B.A. Lampman: Portraits 2016–2018”.
