Pretty Boy - 2015 - 11X14 - Mixed media on cradle board
Well Hello again. This is "Pretty Boy".
At least, I think he is pretty.
I decided to take part in a collage contest put on by Papirmass and Brown Paper Bag. The idea was that they would pair up collage artists to exchange collage materials, ie, I sent a 9X12 envelope full of my usual materials to a gal in Toronto, and she sent a 9X12 envelope full of collage scraps to me. We were meant to create a collage using the pieces sent to us, as well as our usual materials. Upon receiving her scraps, I was initially stymied. Maybe I am particular, maybe I am fussy, maybe I am stuck in my ways (yes, all of the above). The only pieces of paper that I was truly attracted to were pieces of patterned paper... that which I've made into a "paper quilt", above. It was the only way that I could think to use the patterned paper that would feel natural to me... even though I have never done collage in this way before. Some of the "quilt" pieces are from my collection... notably the squares of hair and wallpaper. It was a pain to do, and I'm not sure I would do it again (although... now I have a stash of tiny cut out squares, so...)
Just now when I searched for the email that would remind me how to submit my work for this contest, I noticed for the first time that the theme for this project was supposed to be "New Landscapes". OOPS! Guess I missed the mark on that one. Guess I won't be winning the contest.
