Last week I was lucky enough to spend the week cat-sitting on Saturna Island. I took art supplies, a keyboard, my journal, food, wine, and books. I slept well. I napped every day. I read. I wrote. I did artwork. I sang. I ate dinner every night with my long-time friend Athena and her husband David- they live just up the hill from where I was, which was in a small house nestled in the forest, the ocean just close enough that I could hear the waves. The cats ("the boys", as I liked to call them) turned out to be two exceptional beings... "European Burmese" beauties who were very smart, and excellent company. They slept with me every night (as in, under the covers), and liked to follow me up to Athena and David's, hang around while I was there, and follow me back when I went home. Heaven...? YES.
I took six collages that I had prepared for the occasion, along with six outlines of faces I'd chosen to paint on top. Quite quickly I discovered that I'd rushed the whole process leading up to my sojourn, and wasn't too happy with some of the collages, and most of the faces I'd chosen to paint on top. Damn. I also wondered if I wasn't "done" with the horse collages I was doing...hmm... was it that I was "done", or was it that I had rushed these ones? This is what they call "the process", I suppose...
Long story short, the piece above is the only one that is *possibly* finished. The others were partially completed, and then I spent a lot of time staring at them and thinking of ways to better deal with what I had hastily thrown together for myself. This weekend may see me going in a vastly different direction... SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE. Amen.
